In the midst of a pandemic and with the conflict in Syria reaching its tenth year, European nations, including the United Kingdom, have harshened restrictions and their solidarity towards displaced people has waned significantly, to the point of turning their backs on those in need of support. In this discussion, we bring together both the human lived experience of Syrian newcomers to Scotland, with the grounded legal and political knowledge of those working to improve conditions for asylum, hoping to provide a well-rounded reflection of what it means to be a New Scot, at a time when borders are closing, government policies are growing evermore hostile, and support is increasingly hard to access due to restrictions.
