Last week we were delighted to host our first SWRC Inform seminar on Domestic Abuse and Scots Law – Training for Solicitors. The seminar provided delegates with the knowledge and practical tools – including style writs and pleadings – to work effectively with clients affected by domestic abuse.
The seminar was delivered by Helen Hughes, a Family Law specialist solicitor with over 30 years’ experience dealing with cases involving domestic abuse. Helen began working with Renfrewshire/Paisley Women’s Aid in 1988, and is now a partner with McAuley McCarthy & Co, Paisley, editor and co-author of Domestic Abuse and Scots Law and an editor of Greens Practice Styles. Helen is also a mediator accredited by the Law Society of Scotland, former Chair of the Family Law Association, current Chair of Calm Scotland, and a member of the SWRC’s advisory group.
Feedback for the event was overwhelmingly positive and we will re-run this event in the future.
In the coming days we will be posting a series of blogs about this seminar. These will cover what solicitors need to know about domestic abuse, Protective Orders, and we’ll also be highlighting some key learning points in relation to Contact and Residence Orders in cases where clients are affected by domestic abuse. Keep an eye on our social media to get notifications of when we post new content so you can follow the series!
