JustRight Scotland have sent – alongside other civil society, human rights and equalities organisations – three letters to the Scottish National Party (SNP) candidates for First Minister, calling on them to honour the Scottish Government’s commitments to introduce a new human rights bill in this Parliamentary session.
In March 2021, the Scottish Government announced that it would introduce a new human rights bill by 2026, which would incorporate 4 UN human rights treaties directly into Scots law and provide for the right to a healthy environment.
Following the resignation of the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, we have asked the three SNP candidates to prioritise this new Bill.
You can read the three letters below;
Joint letter to Humza Yousaf
Joint letter to Ash Regan
Joint letter to Kate Forbes
We also call on the Scottish Government to urgently amend and commence the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (Incorporation) (Scotland) Bill, to secure equal protection for the rights of children across Scotland.
The Human Rights Consortium Scotland – to highlight the value and the importance of this new Bill – is organising a series of events which will focus on what the Bill means to Scotland and why implementation is fundamental to protecting all our rights.
